One of the most important indicators of institutional quality is the institution’s efforts and ability to regularly assess its effectiveness in achieving its mission and purpose and to utilise obtained information from this exercise for its continuous improvement. The assessment process requires the gathering and analysis of evidence of congruence between an institution’s stated mission, purposes, and objectives and the actual outcomes of its programs and activities.

Furthermore, for institutions to advance informed planning and decision making as well as optimising resources allocation, they need to determine how well and in what ways they are achieving their stated mission, purpose, and objectives. Additionally, they are required to produce documentary evidence supporting assertions of quality made in their self-study reports and communications with their stakeholders.
